Forum sense at kjernen.com

Welcome to the forum of Kjernen, "The Core", the supporterclub of Rosenborg BK. Join the discussions about the Pride of the North.

Discussions on the Internet follow their own set of rules, and the forum at Kjernen is no exception. Don't be surprised of someone gives you a sourly answer or yells at you if you don't follow the rules. That's Internet!

1. Summary of guidelines

Further down you will find the rules described in details. Here is the short version:

  1. Please, read the forum some before making any posts. Get to know the tone.
  2. Check wether a similar thread exists before making a new.
  3. Remember: Almost none of the writers are spokesmen of Kjernen.
  4. We strive to write correctly. Concentrate on your writing skills.
  5. Avoid debates about language and politics. Discuss that elsewhere.
  6. If you want to make a post, make sure it says something.
  7. Be careful on the use of effects like "graemlins".
  8. You can edit and delete messages.

2. Web sense in general

Web sense, or "netiquette", is about do's and don'ts for participants on the Internet. "Web sense is about using your sense, not using the web - the web is just where you use your sense." Feel free to read this article on Netiquette. It's a good backround.

3. Guideline for users at Kjernen.com

A) Please, do read some posts before contributing.

Different foras on the Internet are just that - different. What is considered acceptable, varies: bad language, "SMS slang", correct typing. The demands to how much a post should actually have to say also varies. Try to get to know what is good tact, and what is unpopular.

An old Internet rule says that you should preferably read a forum for six months before parttaking. Six months might be a bit long, but the idea is sound. Get to know the forum before writing.

B) Is there already an existing thread?

At some occations, questions arise. How do I travel to Trondheim, what's the price on accomodations, what do you think about the forthcoming match, can I get tickets ...

Very often you will find that several persons have the same question. Very often a question is asked before you ask it. Read the forum to see wether anyone have asked, and gotten an answer, before making a new thread.

We do not need five threads discussing the next match against Real Madrid. Join an existing thread.

The forum has a search function (bottom of forum page). Use it to see if you can find a thread of relevance.

This rule is also known as: "Do not make new threads for just about anything!"

C) There are few official spokesmen here.

Here you will find a lot of common Kjernen members. Many have strong opinions, and you might wonder how come the Kjernen has this view or that.

Remember this: Almost none of the debattants are spokesmen of Kjernen. They air their personal view, not that of the supporter club. The board and the leader of Kjernen does not support, and is not responsible, for each and every post here.

Kjernen.com has a board of editors, known as [webred]. As with the board, they have no control on what messages are entered here, and don't vouch for what's written. Only the very worst messages are being deleted.

D) Try to write as correct as possible.

If the messages posted have a good language, the quality of the forum gets better, and it gets easier for everyone to read. It is no shame in previewing your message and fix error before sending it.

Almost no RBK supporters, and very few guests on the forum, have English as their main language. We do not require the perfect Queen's English. However, try to write as good as you can.

Use full sentences and punctuation. Don't use Internet slang like "u r" for "you are".

E) Kjernen.com is not a place to discuss semantics and politics..

If your written English really really sucks, with a high number of errors or lots of Internet slang, you are (more or less) guaranteed to get some sour messages back. That's to be expected.

But please, don't search for every little error in eachother's texts. Again, we don't have English as our primary language, errors happen. Just try your best to write good English.

"Excuse my poor English skills." It's ok, we're not native English speaking either.

What more is, this is a football forum. It doesn't have to be about Rosenborg, but it should be relevant to football. A number of political issues should be left out - there are many foras for such discussions. Many other foras.

F) If you want to make a post, say something that means something.

Messages like "I agree!" does not contribute to any discussion. Once in a while, tough very rarely, it's suitable, but it is totally not interesting to declare wether you agree or not in any and all matters. Feel free to contribute with views, suggestions and comment, but think it through first.

The majority of the short posts are highly uninteresting for others.

Still, note that it can differ what gets percepted as "has a meaning". If someone that has been active at Kjernen.com for years writes a message saying "Ok." and nothing more, it might give quite some meaning to other readers. Should a new user do the same, it means nothing.

This guideline is also known as: "Stop making stupid posts!"

G) Careful on the use of effects.

In depth, this means::

  1. Smileys, emoticons and graemlins. Overuse is not neccessary, and just get tiresome for the reader. If you use more than one for each fifth post, it might be too much. If you use five graemlins on one single post, rethink your habits NOW!
  2. Capital letters. On the Internet, words written in capitals is conceived as YELLING AND RUDE. Stick to the normal rules for the English language.
  3. Punctuation. Both in Norwegian and in English, and in most known languages, one question mark or exclamation mark is normal. Some times 2-3 is useful, but only very rarely.

H) Messages can be edited and deleted.

If you see an error in your message, hit the Edit button to fix it.

Both language- and factual errors can be edited in this manner. It is not neccessary to write a new message, directly after the first, where you correct yourself. Edit instead. (Naturally, you can write several contributions in a debate, you don't have to go back and add ideas to an old message.)

When you edit, you get the chance to specify wether you want the post to be marked as edited. If you have changed the meaning of the text, it is polite to specify, for instance "EDIT: Left out match dates." If not, someone might answer and comment you - and the thing that is commented is no longer in your post. That is confusing.

In the edit window you can also delete the message (button at end of page). Useful, if someone has written a very similar message or something.

Note that there is a time limit on editing and deleting. If you really regret a message, and it is too late to delete or edit, you should contact the web admins and ask nicely wether it could be deleted. Hint: Think before you write, instead. Edits are probably most useful the first half hour after it's written.
